Chase Briscoe put on a show in Monday’s Chili Bowl National Preliminary action on Monday night at the Tulsa Expo Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but came up a little shy of locking his starting spot in Saturday’s Main Event. The Mitchell, Indiana native, who competes as a NASCAR Cup Series driver for Stewart-Haas Racing, started 12th in the 30-lap Monday Night A Feature, and he wasted little time as he knifed his way through the field.

By the time the checkered flag was displayed, Briscoe had racked up tons of passing points, as he had gained eight positions to finish fourth in the A Feature. While it wasn’t enough to lock him into the Main Event, Briscoe should be set up nicely in the Alphabet Soup, which takes place prior to the Main Event on Saturday.

Only two drivers in the 24-car field gained more positions from the start of the race than Briscoe. Chris Windom gained 10 spots from his starting spot and finished fifth, and Cole Bodine gained 11 spots from his starting spot of 23rd to finish 12th.

While Briscoe came home in fourth, it was Tanner Carrick and Shane Golobic, who finished in the top two positions in Monday’s A Feature, which officially locks their places in the starting field for Saturday’s Chili Bowl Nationals Main Event.

The two dirt racing veterans had a pretty great battle for the A Feature win in the closing laps:

Michael Pickens finished the A Feature in third, up two spots from his fifth starting spot, while Briscoe and Windom rounded out the top-five finishers.

Prior to a late-race caution, Briscoe felt he was on his way to scoring at least a second-place finish in the Feature, but ultimately fell short.

“I felt like if that caution didn’t come out with four [laps] to go, I was for sure going to run second,” Briscoe told Matt Weaver following the Feature. “I was right beside Shane. If I get by him, I don’t know if Tanner would have expected anybody to come up on the bottom. If I could have timed it right, I maybe could have gotten there. But I was for sure going to lock in, I felt like. And after the caution, still had a chance, I just truthfully ran four really bad laps. I just overthought everything.”
