Ryan Newman Latest: Fully Alert, Walking, Joking and Playing With Daughters

UPDATE: 1:43 PM ET February 19, 2020: Ryan Newman has officially left the Halifax Medical Center and is on his way home after Monday’s scary crash at Daytona International Speedway. The 42-year old was shown walking out of the hospital with his two daughters in a photo posted by Roush Fenway Racing.

UPDATE: 11:52 AM ET February 19, 2020: A new update on the condition of Ryan Newman has been released by Roush Fenway Racing and it is super positive. According to the update, Newman is fully alert and walking around the hospital and has been joking and playing with his daughters.

The statement from RFR Reads:

“Ryan Newman continues to show great improvement after Monday night’s last-lap accident at Daytona International Speedway.

“The veteran driver is fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center. True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking around with staff, friends and family while spending time playing with his two daughters.”

The team also shared the first photo of Newman since the accident. He is in a hospital gown and is standing with his two daughters.

UPDATE: 3:46 PM ET February 18, 2020: Amazing news has come in the form of a statement from Roush Fenway Racing. Ryan Newman is awake and speaking with doctors and family at Halifax Medical Center.

The latest statement reads:

“Ryan Newman remains under the care of doctors at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. He is awake and speaking with family and doctors.

“Ryan and his family have expressed their appreciation for the concern and heartfelt messages from across the country. They are grateful for the unwavering support of the NASCAR community and beyond.

“We will continue to provide information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: 11:51 AM ET February 18, 2020: Ryan Newman is still undergoing treatment at Halifax Medical Center according to Roush Fenway Racing, who released a statement Tuesday morning.

“On behalf of Roush Fenway Racing and Ryan Newman’s family, we’d like to thank the NASCAR community for the incredible outpouring of support and compassion for Ryan. Your thoughts and prayers have comforted us all.

“Ryan remains at Halifax Medical Center and we will provide further updates on his condition as they become available.”

Original Story: 10:00 PM ET February 17, 2020: At 10:00 PM ET on Monday, Feburary 16, 2020, Steve O’Donnell of NASCAR provided a medical update on Ryan Newman’s condition following a frightening last lap crash in Monday’s Daytona 500.

According to O’Donnell, Newman has been receiving treatment and further evaluation at Halifax Medical Center.

A statement from Roush Fenway Racing says that Newman is suffering from injuries and is in serious condition, but it does not appear that the driver has life threatening injuries.

Here is the full statement from the team:

“Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center. He is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation and we will provide more information as it becomes available.”

We will pass along any and all official updates about Newman’s condition as they become available, but this is extremely encouraging news.

Newman, 42, is an 18-time winner in the NASCAR Cup Series and he was in position to possibly pull off the win in Monday’s Daytona 500.

Newman had the lead of the race coming off the final turn, but had to put a block on Ryan Blaney. As he blocked Blaney, the two made contact. This sent Newman into the wall. The contact with the wall sent Newman’s car flipping.

Corey LaJoie, who had nowhere to go, slammed into the top of the driver’s side door area of Newman’s car at nearly 200-miles-per-hour.
