Daniel Suarez Scores Much-Needed Top-10 at Watkins Glen

Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen marked a historic milestone for Trackhouse Racing, which for the first time in the organization’s history, placed three vehicles inside the top-10 at the conclusion of a NASCAR Cup Series event.

Shane Van Gisbergen ended up securing a victory in Sunday’s 90-lap contest, breaking the rookie record for the most wins in a season at NASCAR’s top level. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola 600 winner Ross Chastain rounded out the top-10, collecting a tenth-place finish.

Daniel Suarez collected a seventh-place finish on the afternoon at Watkins Glen, which, upon initial inspection, doesn’t seem like the glitzy and glamorous finish that the Monterrey, Mexico-native was looking for, but it’s a great result for the No. 99 Chevrolet.

Suarez hasn’t finished a NASCAR Cup Series event inside the top-10 since Texas Motor Speedway earlier this season (May 4), and his best result since securing a runner-up finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the fifth event of the season.

“It feels nice to get a good finish for this No. 99 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet team,” Daniel Suarez said post-race. “For the last couple of months, I feel like we’ve had decent, top-10 speed. We just haven’t been able to execute. Today, we were able to execute a decent race. This team did a good job all day. Our Chevrolet was pretty good – I don’t know if it was good enough to win, but it was good enough to be fighting in the top-10, and that’s where we ended up.”

For the 33-year-old driver, a performance like Sunday at Watkins Glen is extremely important. After five seasons at Trackhouse, Suarez finds himself in the lame-duck position, announcing earlier this season that he would be parting ways with the organization at season’s end.

So, while hunting for his next seat in the NASCAR Cup Series (or one of NASCAR’s National Series), Suarez needs to put together some good runs – and, with two races left to secure a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, a win would really help to bolster his resume with another postseason appearance.

In eight career starts at Watkins Glen International, Suarez has collected three top-five finishes and four finishes inside the top-10. The road courses have been solid tracks for the former Xfinity Series champion, but now, until the post-season event at Charlotte’s ROVAL, those are finished.

“I’m not sure. This place [Watkins Glen International] has been good to me in the past. Like Iowa [Speedway] and Indianapolis [Motor Speedway], there have been a lot of tracks that have been good to me in the past,” Suarez added. “We’ve just had a lot of accidents and things happen that were out of our control. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into the next couple of races and get a win.”

Suarez and Trackhouse Racing have two races until the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, at Richmond Raceway and Daytona International Speedway. With the team’s points position, a victory in one of those two races would be required for a third post-season berth in the last four years.
