Video: Not Clear; Sam Mayer Catches Taylor Gray, Goes Into Wall, Catches Fire

Sam Mayer’s day is done after the driver of the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro completed 77 laps in the Focused Health 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Mayer was in a battle with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Taylor Gray, when he was told by his spotter that he was clear. Mayer went up the track, but was not in fact clear. He made contact with the front of Gray’s car, which sent his No. 1 Chevrolet into the outside wall.

As Mayer slammed the wall, the rear bumper cover was ripped off of his race car, and then the car burst into flames moments later.

This will mark the seventh DNF through the opening 24 races for the Wisconsin native, all seven have been due to crashes. The DNF also is the third in the last five races for Mayer.

Taylor Gray was able to continue on after the incident and remains inside the top-10 as Lap 81.
