Joey Logano’s championship hopes took a massive hit with five laps remaining in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, but the impact to his championship aspirations was an afterthought during a frightening crash.
Logano, who was frustrated and attempting to shove Ross Chastain, a lapped car who was leading the outside lane of cars, in an effort to get to the race lead, took a shove from behind from Carson Hocevar on Lap 182. The contact from Hocevar sent Logano’s car skidding sideways.

Logano spun to the outside wall, and as he hit the outside wall, his car would flip onto its roof. Logano would take a long, spark-inducing skid to a stop on the frontstretch of the 2.66-mile superspeedway as other cars around him continued to crash through the field.
It took several minutes for the safety crew to get Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford Mustang flipped back onto its wheels. As the car was put back upright, Logano was helped from his car, and as he came out of the window, the crowd erupted. Logano would then put on his Shell Pennzoil hat, and would walk to the ambulance.
Other drivers involved in the crash were Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, Daniel Suarez, AJ Allmendinger, Chris Buescher, Chase Briscoe, Josh Berry, Riley Herbst, Erik Jones, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Alex Bowman, Carson Hocevar, Connor Zilisch, and Shane van Gisbergen.
Among the drivers involved, Herbst took the hardest hits. Herbst went into the outside wall, which knocked the brakes out of his No. 35 Toyota, and then he shot back into the inside retaining wall. Herbst was helped from his car, and appeared to be relatively okay, but was taken to the infield care center.
