Video: Leaders Make Contact After Garrett Smithley Spins at Martinsville

Brandon Jones and Connor Zilisch were running 1-2 in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Martinsville Speedway, when a stack-up gave both the No. 20 Menards Toyota GR Supra and the No. 88 Carolina Carports Chevrolet significant damage.

The incident started up further in the pack, when Greg Van Alst got into the left rear of Garrett Smithley and spun the No. 14 Chevrolet around on the frontstretch. As Smithley spun around, his SS-GreenLight Racing machine drifted into the racing line and came to a stop.

With Jones and Zilisch quickly rounding Turn 4, there was a sudden reflex by leader Brandon Jones to hit the breaks, causing the No. 88 to smash into the rear-end of the No. 20, which caused major damage to both vehicles.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was forced to come down pit road and fix severe damage to the left-rear of his Menards Toyota, while Zilisch stayed on the racetrack, but was instructed by crew chief Mardy Lindley that using the bumper would be off limits for the rest of the aftenroon.
