Jason Burdett Not Returning as Crew Chief for JR Motorsports in 2024

Jason Burdett, a long-time crew chief for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, will not be returning to the organization in 2024, a representative from the team confirmed to TobyChristie.com on Tuesday.

Burdett first joined JR Motorsports in 2015, after a successful seven-year stint as car chief for Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jeff Gordon (2008 to 2010) and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (2011 to 2014) in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Upon joining the team, Burdett was assigned to lead the No. 7 team, which at the time was driven by Regan Smith. In one season together, Smith and Burdett managed to collect two victories, 11 top-five, and 26 top-10 finishes, leaving them to finish fourth in points.

The following season marked the beginning of Burdett’s seven-year relationship with Xfinity Series veteran Justin Allgaier, in which time the pairing managed to notch an impressive 16 wins, while only finishing outside the top five in points on one occasion (2018).

Prior to the start of the 2023 Xfinity Series campaign, Burdett was part of a major personnel shuffle at JR Motorsports, which saw the Arkport, New York-native reassigned to the No. 9 Chevrolet, which was to be driven by Brandon Jones.

That pre-season move resulted in a disappointing campaign for both Burdett and Jones, who together failed to visit victory lane or qualify for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. At season’s end, the No. 9 Chevrolet had only managed to garner three finishes inside the top-five and 10 top-10 results, leaving them 14th in final points, the worst points position of Burdett’s career to date.

Over the course of his 293 starts as a crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Burdett has accumulated a career total of 18 wins, 113 top-five, and 193 top-10 finishes, as well as three pole positions and 4,305 laps led.

Prior to joining Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, Burdett spent the second half of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series campaign as crew chief for Dale Jarrett and Michael Waltrip Racing, recording a best finish of 17th at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

While JR Motorsports confirmed to TobyChristie.com that Burdett would no longer be with the organization in 2024, the team says that as of the time of publishing, they have no further updates on who will serve as crew chief of the No. 9 Chevrolet.
