The Chase Elliott inspection saga at Watkins Glen on Sunday morning has been well documented, but NASCAR has officially announced that Elliott’s team along with Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team have been assessed with L1 penalties stemming from the rear-window air deflectors.
According to NASCAR, both drivers will be without their crew chiefs in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at the Glen, so Alan Gustafson and Adam Stevens are packing their bags and heading home.
Team engineer Tom Gray will stand in for Gustafson on the No. 9 team, while Car Chief Chris Sherwood will fill in for Stevens on the No. 20 team.
Each team will also be docked 10 points for the infraction and NASCAR will issue a $25,000 fine. Additionally, both drivers will have to start at the rear of the field for Sunday’s race. Bell was set to start from the seventh position, while Elliott was expected to start 11th.
