Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who got the 2021 Rolex 24 started for the No. 48 Ally Cadillac DPi team by driving the start of the race, will get back behind the wheel for his second stint of the event.
Johnson’s second stint will begin with roughly 15 and a half hours left in the twice-around-the-clock event.
Thanks in part to flawless driving by his teammate Kamui Kobayashi, the No. 48 team had a 19-second lead when Johnson began getting swapped over in the driver seat.
After the time taken for the driver change, the No. 48 fell to fourth in the race standings, but shot right back to the lead once the rest of the driver changes were completed. Johnson is chasing his first win in his eighth attempt at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Currently, the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac DPi team is in second with Renger Van Der Zande behind the wheel, currently.
The No. 31 Action Express Racing Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi team, which has Chase Elliott on the team, sits fourth overall and Mike Conway is behind the wheel of that machine at the present time.
The No. 60 Meyer Shank team, which features Juan Pablo Montoya and AJ Allmendinger on their driver team, is sitting sixth with Dane Cameron behind the wheel.
