Video: Chase Elliott Goes From Battling For Lead to a Lap Down After Running Over Jack

screengrab from NBCSN race broadcast

What a reversal of fortunes for Chase Elliott in a matter of moments in Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway. Heading into a green flag pit cycle, Elliott was in a heated battle with Denny Hamlin for the lead.

As they came to pit road, Elliott nearly overshot his pit box, but thought he actually had overshot his box.

The team began to pit the car, and Elliott backed the cars up, which caused him to run over the jack. This caused the team to lose 20-or-so seconds trying to get a new jack under the car.

After the chaotic pit stop, Elliott dropped from battling for the lead to being a lap down in 15th.
