Alex Bowman had been 0-for-his last 80 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series heading into Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course. But with the race being shortened due to an 8:20 PM CT curfew, the driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and his crew chief Blake Harris found themselves in a position to make a strategy call to stay on wet-weather tires to give them a shot for the race win.

Bowman worked his way around Joey Hand for the lead with eight laps left in the race, and Tyler Reddick, who was closing in fast on slick tires, caught the wall on the final lap and saw his late-race charge end with a runner-up finish to Bowman.

Following his first win since the 2022 season, Bowman’s race-winning No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was taken to post-race inspection, where the car received a passing grade from NASCAR inspectors. As a result, NASCAR declared Bowman and his race team the official winners of the race.

This marks the eighth win of Bowman’s 309-race NASCAR Cup Series career, and with the win, Bowman now secures his place in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

No issues were detected in post-race inspection, which means all results and standings are now considered official.

Tyler Reddick came home with the second-place finish, 2.863 seconds behind Bowman. Ty Gibbs, Joey Hand, and Michael McDowell rounded out the top five finishers.
