NASCAR Announces 2020 Owner Point Swaps For Xfinity and Truck Series

Some interesting happenings were dropped on Monday, when NASCAR officially announced owner point swaps between teams in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series for the 2020 season. Here is a full breakdown of who now owns what set of owner points from 2019:

NASCAR Xfinity Series

  • GMS Racing has sent it’s No. 23 2019 Owner Points to Our Motorsports, which will field the No. 02 in 2020.
  • Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 98 2019 Owner Points have been transferred to Jimmy Means Racing’s No. 52 team.
  • MBM Motorsports has transferred their No. 61 car’s 2019 Owner Points to Hattori Racing’s No. 61 team.
  • Jimmy Means Racing has sent it’s No. 52 2019 Owner Points to Mike Harmon Racing’s No. 74 team.
  • Richard Childress Racing has swapped their No. 2 2019 Owner Points to their own No. 21 team, which will compete full-time with various drivers this season.
  • Stewart-Haas Racing will send it’s No. 00 2019 Owner Points to their own No. 98 team.
  • DGM Racing will swap 2019 Owner Points with their No. 92 and No. 36 teams.
  • RSS Racing will swap 2019 Owner Points with their No. 93 and No. 39 teams.
  • MBM Motorsports will send their No. 35 2019 Owner Points to their No. 66 team.
  • MBM Motorsports will also send their No. 66 2019 Owner Points to their No. 13 team.
  • Brandonbilt Motorsports will swap their 2019 Owner Points between their No. 86 and No. 68 teams.
  • BJ McLeod Motorsports will swap 2019 Owner Points between their No. 99 and No. 78 teams.
  • JD Motorsports will send their No. 01 2019 Owner Points to their newly numbered No. 6 car.
  • JD Motorsports will also send their No. 0 2019 Owner Points to their No. 4 car.
  • JD Motorsports will also send their No. 15 2019 owner points to their No. 0 car.
  • JD Motorsports will also send their No. 4 2019 owner points to their No. 15 car.

What all does this mean?

Unlike the NASCAR Cup Series, there aren’t any Charters which lock teams in each and every week. In the NXS it’s all about the Owner Standings, if you’re too slow in qualifying. The top-four in owner points (top five if there isn’t a past champion to utilize the past champion provisional), that don’t lock into the top-31 in qualifying are locked into the starting grid.

This is why it was important for a team like Jimmy Means Racing to trade up to the No. 98 Owner Points.

These moves also essentially confirm that Stewart-Haas Racing and Richard Childress Racing will run only one team each (No. 98 and No. 21) in 2020, and neither will be the team that made it into the Championship 4 this past season.

It also means that JD Motorsports will now run a No. 6 car and that they have transferred their points around so their No. 15 car will be the highest ranked in Owner Points.

Several other teams (such as RSS Racing) have shuffled Owner standings around in an apparent effort to secure a place in the starting field with their second team car, while their primary car, and seemingly stronger car, will possibly have to qualify on speed each weekend.

NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series

  • Young’s Motorsports will transfer their No. 12 2019 Owner Points to Reaume Brothers Racing’s No. 00 team.
  • Kyle Busch Motorsports will send their No. 46 2019 Owner Points to Spencer Davis’ No. 11 team.
  • NEMCO Motorsports will send their No. 8 2019 Owner Points to GMS Racing’s No. 21 team.
  • DGR Crosley will send their No. 54 2019 Owner Points to Front Row Motorsports’ No. 38 team.
  • JJL Racing will send their No. 97 2019 Owner Points to Diversified Motorsport Enterprises’ No. 97 team.
  • DGR Crosley will also send their No. 17 2019 Owner Points to their own No. 15 team.
  • Kyle Busch Motorsports will swap 2019 Owner Points between their No. 18 and No. 51 teams.
  • GMS Racing will send their No. 24 2019 Owner Points to their own No. 26 team.
  • Niece Motorsports will send their No. 38 2019 Owner Points to their newly renumbered No. 40 team.
  • NEMCO Motorsports will send their No. 87 2019 Owner Points to their No. 8 team.

Like in the Xfinity Series, the Truck Series does not have Chartered Positions. The top-27 in Truck Series qualifying lock into the field each week, followed by four Owner Points provisionals (five if there isn’t a past-champion needing the past-champion provisional).

Again, this is an indication that Young’s Motorsports will not run the No. 12 truck in 2020. It also appears, based on the Owner Point shuffling, that DGR Crosley will not run the No. 54 or No. 17 this season.

Some interesting moves have been made on the back end for the NXS and NGROTS teams for the 2020 season. It’ll be interesting to watch it all unfold as the entry list is beginning to take more and more shape with Daytona in the near future.

  1. I won’t remember these figures, but it is very interesting to know…..question….Spencer Davis Racing, is that a man’s name or two last names? Just wondered if Jimmy Spencer was running a truck team?
