Layne Riggs, who finds himself behind the eight ball, err, the No. 11 truck of Kaden Honeycutt — in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings, began his quest to reclaim the point lead by pacing practice for Friday night’s Ecosave 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

With a lap time of 30.132 seconds (179.211 mph), the driver of the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford F-150 led the way in the session by a margin of 0.239 seconds. Riggs says his crew chief, Dylan Cappello, has been working on drivability for him, with Charlotte Motor Speedway presenting one of the biggest challenges on the circuit.

“Yeah, we kind of made some big balance changes there. This track is just so sensitive because of the bumps. I’m sure they’ve been talking about the bumps a lot here. It’s the roughest track we go to besides the street course,” Riggs explained in an interview on FS2.

Riggs says after starting with their setup from the spring race at this track, the team has made changes through simulator prep work, and throughout Friday’s 50-minute practice to dial in the truck.

“We’ve just been trying ot tackle it. Been working hard in the Ford Racing simulator. Took our setup that we had in the spring, and just tried to tweak off of our notes,” Riggs said.

Connor Mosack, who is attempting to help the No. 7 Spire Motorsports team win the owner’s championship, was second-fastest in the session, and he was followed by Corey LaJoie, the top RAM Trucks contender, in third.

Ben Rhodes was the second-highest Chase contender, as he clocked in fourth-fastest in the session, and Rajah Caruth, a full-time NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series contender, ranked fifth-fastest behind the wheel of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado.

Kaden Honeycutt, the championship leader, was only able to muster the 15th-fastest lap in the practice session.
