NASCAR and the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) announced this week the official opening of voting for the 2021 edition of the Most Popular Driver (MPD) Award presented by Hooters ahead of Champion’s Week in Nashville in December.

2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Chase Elliott is the defending winner of the award and is seeking his fourth consecutive honor. His father Bill Elliott holds the record for the most MPD awards with 16 between 1984 and 2002. NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits one shy of the record with 15 straight honors from 2003-2017.

As far as NASCAR’s second series, Justin Allgaier of JR Motorsports is looking to claim his third consecutive award and the tenth straight for JR Motorsports. Danica Patrick’s 2012 honor kicked off a nine-year streak for the company.

Down in the Truck Series, GMS Racing’s Zane Smith will look to make it two-in-a-row for the honors after a late-season surge landed him in the Championship 4 in Phoenix. It would mark just the second time in organization history that a GMS Racing driver would hold the title as Most Popular Driver in the Series.
