Christopher Bell was looking for his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series win, and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver for sure had the dominant car in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.
However, under a caution at Lap 219, Bell was mired back in the pack due to varying pit strategies. As several drivers, led by Ryan Blaney, remained on track while Bell and others pitted, and others took two tires on pit road while Bell took four tires, Bell would restart on Lap 226 from the 12th position.
As he attempted to knife his way back through the field, Bell found trouble. Big trouble.
The driver of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry XSE, who had won Stages 1 and 2, and led a race-high 131 laps, found himself in a battle with Kyle Larson when his car got loose, and he spun around in Turn 2.
The spin would end with Bell’s car slamming driver’s-side-door-first into the outside wall. The damage would break the toe link on the No. 20 DeWalt Tools machine, and would force him to pit road for extensive repairs. While on pit road, the damage would prove to be too much to repair in the allotted time, and Bell would be done for the day.
A frustrated Bell said he simply lost his cool, which led to his race-ending crash.
“Just put myself in a bad spot and lost my cool,” Bell explained. “Got back in traffic with all of those yellow flags, and had a bad restart. Just put myself in a really bad aero spot getting into [Turn] 1 and just spun it out.”
