Twice before, the NASCAR Cup Series has run a points-paying event outside of the United States, both north of the corner in Canada, in the 1950s. In 2025, a third circuit will be added to that list, this time in Mexico City, Mexico.
On Tuesday, NASCAR officially confirmed that the NASCAR Cup Series — along with the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Mexico Series — will be competing at Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez on June 14 and 15, 2025.
In attendance for the historic press conference were Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President & Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer, Federico Alaman, Head of Commercial Partnerships for OCESA, Jimmy Morales, CEO of NASCAR Mexico Series, and Daniel Suárez, driver of No. 99 for Trackhouse Racing.
“This is a historic moment for our sport, and specifically for the NASCAR Cup Series, in being able to expand our footprint to Mexico,” said Kennedy. “We’ve been bold about our intentions to grow on a global scale, and there isn’t a better place to take the next step in that journey than at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City.”
It’s the first time since 1958 that the NASCAR Cup Series will award points for an event held outside of the United States, and the first time the series will travel to Mexico for an event of any kind.
NASCAR’s presence in Mexico has always been strong. Founded in 2004, the NASCAR Mexico Series has been the premier stock-car racing division in Mexico with 17 seasons under the NASCAR name.
Daniel Suarez, multi-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, and Andres Perez, the current ARCA Menards Series points leader, are among the talent to come from the NASCAR Mexico Series and pursue a career in NASCAR’s National Series.
Between 2005 and 2008, the NASCAR Xfinity Series contested four events at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with winners including Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex, Jr., and Juan Pablo Montoya. Though, it isn’t the same racetrack, as it was remodeled for Formula One in 2015.
At OCESA, we are dedicated to entertaining people, and this has positioned us as the most powerful live events platform in Mexico and Latin America, as well as one of the most important globally,” said Alejandro Soberón, Founder and CEO of OCESA. “The arrival of the NASCAR Cup Series to our country reflects the significant growth that motorsports has experienced in Mexico, an achievement in which Escudería Telmex has played a major role by promoting the NASCAR Mexico Series and supporting drivers like Daniel Suárez.”
The NASCAR Cup Series first competed internationally in 1952 at Stamford Park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in a race won by Buddy Shuman. Eight years later, the most recent internationally held event was at the Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto.
Coverage for the June 14 NASCAR Xfinity Series event will be on The CW, while the June 15 NASCAR Cup Series event will be on Amazon Prime. Both platforms are new to NASCAR in 2025, as part of an expanded television broadcast deal.
