BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Speeds increased significantly for the Indy NXT drivers at Barber Motorsports Park as Nolan Siegel set the pace in the second practice session ahead of Sunday’s race.
The California native went around the 17-turn, 2.3-mile natural terrain road course in 1 minute, 10.6303 seconds to average 117.230 mph in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing entry. Second fastest was Christian Rasmussen in the No. 6 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing entry.
Siegel’s lap time is significant in that it is a half second faster than the Indy NXT track record of 1 minute, 11.5149 seconds. Siegel’s lap was not a track record since track records can only be set in qualifying or race sessions.
The top 12 drivers in the second Indy NXT practice session were all faster than Friday’s quick time from Rasmussen, which bodes well for a new track record in qualifying at 1:20 p.m. Central time.
