BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Christian Rasmussen set an unofficial track record as the Danish driver led the opening Indy NXT practice session at Barber Motorsports Park.
The No. 6 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing machine went around the 2.3-mile, 17-turn natural terrain road course in 1 minute, 11.4618 seconds to average 115.866 mph. Because track records can only be set in qualifying or the race, Linus Lundqvist still has the official Indy NXT track record at Barber of 1 minute, 11.5149 seconds.
Kyffin Simpson in the No. 21 HMD Motorsports with Chip Ganassi Racing entry was second fastest, .1087 seconds slower than the 2021 USF Pro 2000 champion. Nolan Siegel was third quickest in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing entry.
There was one red flag in the session for the stopped car of Danial Frost. The St. Petersburg race winner managed to restart his No. 68 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing entry and get back to pit road under its own power.
