Video: Kurt Busch Tire Carrier Dives Onto Car Hood in Effort to Prevent Loose Wheel Penalty

Kurt Busch Loose Wheel Darlington 2022
Kurt Busch’s tire changer dove onto the hood of the No. 45 car during an early pit stop at Darlington in an effort to avoid penalties for a loose wheel.

Incredible heads up move by Kurt Busch’s tire carrier Joshua Shipplett. On a pit stop early in the race, Shipplett noticed that the left rear tire on Busch’s car was not fully secure as Busch began to accelerate from pit road.

Knowing that the penalty is a four-race suspension for the crew chief, tire changer and jack man, Shipplett took matters into his own hands and dove onto the hood of Busch’s No. 45 car to alert him to stop the race car.

Busch did just that, the tire rolled out from under the No. 45 machine, but landed inside the pit box, which could potentially prevent the massive penalties for the race team.

Here is video of the drama on pit road:

We won’t know for sure if the move by Shipplett prevented any penalty until NASCAR releases their weekly penalty report following this weekend’s race at Darlington, but regardless, Shipplett needs to be applauded for putting his body on the line to make sure a loose wheel wasn’t bouncing on a race track.
