Some of the NASCAR XFINITY Series’ top teams got a small taste of what it is like running as a small team this weekend in Richmond.

Teams were required (unless approved by NASCAR) to utilize the same car that was raced on Friday for the second race of the doubleheader on Saturday.

Small teams such as BJ McLeod Motorsports are no strangers to this. With the lack of millions of dollars in funding, small teams often reuse the same material such as bodies and chassis’ during a season consecutively.

Matt Mills turned some heads during both races, scoring a season-best 13th on both days of racing. Mills finished on the lead lap on Saturday, something he has only accomplished twice this season.

Thanks to the invert following Friday’s race for the Saturday starting order, Mills started the race third, giving his team and sponsor J.F. Electric some media exposure.

The Lynchburg, Virginia native took to Twitter Sunday morning to reflect on the weekend.

To add to the celebrated feat, Mills finished better than some heavy hitters of the series in both races. Mills topped Harrison Burton and Brandon Jones, two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, on Friday and finished better than championship favorite Chase Briscoe on Saturday.

Mills will look to continue the momentum as he heads into Bristol this weekend. He scored his best finish at the track in 2019, finishing 18th with BJ McLeod Motorsports.
