The first on-track session from Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway is complete!
Throughout the 50-minute practice session, many teams had varying agendas, with some drivers only running limited single-car runs, while towards the end of the season, some of the Toyota-backed teams (and Chandler Smith) got together and did some drafting.
Denny Hamlin, a three-time winner of the Daytona 500, was quickest in the practice session, posting a lap time of 48.005 seconds (187.480mph). Bubba Wallace, driving for 23XI Racing, was second-quickest, with Ty Gibbs, Chandler Smith, and John Hunter Nemechek rounding out the top five.
Smith, driving the No. 66 for Garage 66 (MBM Motorsports), was the quickest open entry in the practice session. Helio Castroneves, driving the No. 91 for Trackhouse Racing, was the second fastest of the nine open entries, although both of those teams had some drafting assistance.
