Matt Mills, who missed last weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Kansas Speedway while suffering from the flu, will miss another race this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Mills, who was set to contest Friday’s event in the No. 78 entry for BJ McLeod Motorsports issued a statement on Wednesday that states he is still attempting to shake side effects from having the flu. Mills, like last week, again reiterates that he has not tested positive for COVID-19.

BJ McLeod, who owns the race team, will slide behind the wheel in place of Mills.

Here is the full statement, which Mills posted to social media on Wednesday:

“Unfortunately, I will once again not be able to compete in Friday’s Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway due to continued side effects from the flu. Like I said last week, I have tested negative for COVID-19. I expect to make a full recovery and return to competition at Texas Motor Speedway on September 24.

“Thank you JF Electric, Utilitra and Thompson Electric for the continued support. Thank you to my BJ McLeod Motorsports team for the hard work and to BJ McLeod for filling in for me.”

Last weekend, at Kansas Garrett Smithley filled in for Mills in the No. 5 BJMM entry and recorded a 32nd-place finish in the rain-shortened event.

Mills, a native of Virginia, has 115 starts to his name in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition. The 25-year-old driver has a career-best finish of 10th, which came at Daytona International Speedway in the Summer of 2019.
