Kyle Sieg spent most of his Saturday afternoon knee-deep in parts and pieces in the NASCAR Xfinity Series garage at Phoenix Raceway, as the family-owned RSS Racing organization made sure that Ryan, the oldest of the Sieg brothers, was able to get his backup car on-track.
All of that hard work last weekend resulted in a top-five result for the No. 39 Ford Mustang, but this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it was time for younger brother Kyle to step into the spotlight.
The 23-year-old racer brought his No. 28 TopPool.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse to the checkered flag in the 11th position in Saturday’s The LiUNA, matching his best finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on an intermediate racetrack.
“It’s a really good day,” Sieg told The CW post-race. “Just to build on it and get better. We’ve had a rough start to the season the first two, and we had a good run last week [at Phoenix], and we’re just getting better and better each week.”
Even though NASCAR’s second-tier division was competing in the gambling capital of the world, there was absolutely no luck or gambling involved in this stellar run for the team, as Sieg spent much of the afternoon punching above his weight, beating top-tier teams like Haas Factory Team, Richard Childress Racing, and Kaulig Racing, among others.
Though, potentially an even bigger milestone for Kyle and the No. 28 team on Saturday, was that they managed to show speed comparable to that of Ryan Sieg and the organization’s flagship No. 39 Ford Mustang – which has spent the last couple of seasons coming up just short of victories.
Saturday’s 300-miler contest was without a doubt the best showing of Sieg’s 86-race NASCAR Xfinity Series career, having spent 192 laps inside the top-15 (more than three times his previous single-race high), and had an average running position of 12.21 (smashing his previous record of 15.99 at Texas in the Fall of 2023).
“It’s very different, but we’ll see how we are at Miami,” Sieg said when asked about next weekend. “I knew we were going to be pretty good today; we’ve had this one circled on our schedule all year to come here and run pretty good.”
With older brother Ryan bringing home a solid seventh-place result, it’s the first time (on a non-drafting track) that the Sieg brothers have finished inside the top-12 together in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
Part of the objective for Kyle this weekend at Las Vegas was just to keep the vehicle in one piece, as this is the racecar that Ryan Sieg will use at Martinsville Speedway two weeks from Saturday.
Not only did Sieg manage to accomplish that, but he also proved to himself and the NASCAR Xfinity Series field that with a fast car, the No. 28 and its driver could run against the big dogs.
“I’m just glad I can show that we can run with these guys,” Sieg added.
Sieg leaves Las Vegas and heads to Homestead-Miami Speedway sitting 27th in NASCAR Xfinity Series points, as the Tucker, Georgia-native looks to work himself out of a hole from some early-season problems.
