After numerous close calls throughout the first 63 races of his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series career, Carson Kvapil finally pulled through with an emotional win in Saturday’s Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The moment was so stirring that even Kvapil’s team owner, Dale Earnhardt Jr., was brought to tears.
Kvapil took the race lead from Ross Chastain with 22 laps remaining, but in the closing laps, it was his other teammate, Justin Allgaier, who was closing in his rearview mirror. Allgaier, who already has a career-high six wins this season, was consistently turning the fastest laps on the track over the final few circuits around the 2.5-mile rectangular oval.
However, Kvapil was able to keep his poise and didn’t put a wheel wrong down the stretch. As a result, he crossed the famous yard of bricks for the final time ahead of Allgaier by a margin of 0.643 seconds to secure his first career victory.
“It means the world to me. Man, I don’t know. It’s very emotional,” Kvapil said in a post-race interview on The CW.
Following the win, Kvapil celebrated with a “Polish victory lap,” a move made famous by Alan Kulwicki. During that lap, Kvapil said he soaked in what the win truly meant.
“I rode around on that lap backwards, and just sat there and thought about all the hard work I put in, me and my dad, Travis, to get to this point,” Kvapil explained. “The faith that Dale Jr., L.W. Miller, and Kelley [Earnhardt] Miller put behind me to give me this opportunity and to give me a second chance, you could say, to come back at it this year.”
That being said, Kvapil knows there’s still more work to do for the remainder of the season.
“I knew we were going to get one, and I’m hoping we can chase some more towards the end,” Kvapil said.
In taking the win, Kvapil was one of five drivers who locked their position in the Chase for the Championship on Saturday. Kvapil, Sheldon Creed, Corey Day, Brandon Jones, and Austin Hill joined Justin Allgaier and Jesse Love, who had previously secured their place in the Chase.
With Allgaier finishing runner-up followed by Ross Chastain, and Chase Elliott, that secured a clean sweep of the top-four positions for JR Motorsports on the day. That accomplishment is the first time any organization has ever finished 1-2-3-4 in a NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series event.
William Sawalich came home an impressive fifth, which allowed him to close within seven points of Taylor Gray, his teammate, for the final slot in the Chase Grid. With two races remaining until The Chase, Sawalich will look to point his way past Gray.
Brent Crews, Corey Day, Sheldon Creed, Brandon Jones, and Austin Hill rounded out the top-10 finishers in the race.
Next up for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series is a date with Iowa Speedway on Saturday, August 8. That race will be televised on The CW, and TV coverage is set to kick off at 5:00 PM ET.
