Sam Mayer scored an emphatic win in a late-race duel with Riley Herbst, which was eventually settled for good in an overtime finish in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Hyvee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway. Mayer took the lead away from Herbst with 10 laps remaining, but a caution for John Hunter Nemechek on Lap 245, re-racked the field, and sent the race into Overtime.
While Herbst would be credited with leading Lap 251, Mayer would scoot back around on the following lap, and he would take the checkered flag on Lap 253.
Following the race, Mayer’s race-winning No. 1 Roto-Rooter JR Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro made a trip into the post-race inspection bay, where it was inspected with a fine-toothed comb. At the end of the inspection, Mayer’s car was deemed legal.
As a result, NASCAR officially declared Mayer and his No. 1 team as the official winners of Saturday’s race at Iowa Speedway.
This win marks the second of the 2024 season for Mayer, and it’s the sixth win of his young NASCAR Xfinity Series career.
No issues were detected in post-race inspection, which means all results and standings are now considered official.
Herbst would hang on for the runner-up finish, and he was followed by Corey Heim, who tied an all-time team-best finish for Sam Hunt Racing. Sammy Smith and Sheldon Creed rounded out the top-five finishers in the race.
