It comes as no surprise, but Joe Gibbs Racing finally made the official announcement that Ty Gibbs, grandson of Joe Gibbs, will drive the organization’s No. 54 entry for the full 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule.
According to a press release from JGR, Chris Gayle will return as Gibbs’ crew chief this season.
Gibbs, who won four NASCAR Xfinity Series races — including his series debut at Daytona’s road course — in just 18 starts a season ago and won the 2021 ARCA Menards Series Championship, is ready for the next step.
“I’m excited to get going on the 2022 season,” Gibbs said. “Monster Energy will sponsor the majority of the races, including the first one at Daytona and it’s great to have Interstate Batteries and Sport Clips on board. Chris Gayle and the crew guys from the 54 were great last year and hopefully we can have even more success this year. Of course, I can’t thank everyone at Toyota and TRD enough for all their support as well. I’m just ready to get going in the No. 54 Toyota GR Supra.”
Monster Energy will serve as the anchor sponsor for the effort, while Interstate Batteries was announced as a three-race primary sponsor back in October and Sport Clips will also have primary sponsorship for the No. 54 car in some form this season.
Gibbs, who won the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series Rookie of the Year award, despite running a little over half the schedule, will run for the overall championship this season.
