World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway will be a new addition to the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. This according to a Monday evening report from STLToday.com, which cites multiple unnamed sources.

The official announcement will be made on Wednesday according to the story.

WWT Raceway at Gateway has been host to 15 NASCAR Xfinity Series races and 21 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races since the 1997 season.

The last NASCAR-sanctioned race at the track happened in late August.

Sheldon Creed won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race that day, and he has now won the past two NCWTS events at the Madison, IL track.

Gateway to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2022 Adds More Track Diversity

The 1.250-mile length of the oval will bring an additional wrinkle for teams in 2022. NASCAR has gone on a road course frenzy adding COTA, the Daytona road course, the Indianapolis Road Course over the last year.

It’ll be good to see them add another track under 1.5-mile in length, as well.

Gateway has been rumored for years to be in the running for a NASCAR Cup Series date. But it was a report from Sport Business Journal in August, that really signaled things were close to happening this time.

We don’t have the full scope of all of the changes we will see on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, yet. But it seems we are already seeing one great addition in the form of Gateway.

Will we see the Busch Clash at the LA Memorial Coliseum?

That remains to be seen, but according to recent chatter, that’s a real possibility as well.

It feels like nothing is off the table for 2022. But you have to wonder how much more wide-open the 2023 schedule will be if some of the gambles NASCAR ultimately decides to make in 2022, actually pay off.
