On Tuesday Morning, Wood Brothers Racing announced that Jonathan Hassler would assume crew chiefing duties of the organization’s NASCAR Cup Series entry, starting with this weekend’s All-Star festivities at Texas Motor Speedway.
Starting with this weekend’s all star race in Texas, Jonathan Hassler will assume the crew chief role for our 21 Mustang.
We want to thank Greg Erwin for leading our team for the previous three seasons.— Wood Brothers Racing (@woodbrothers21) June 8, 2021
Hassler has served as crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series twice this season, leading the Wood Brothers Racing No. 21 at Martinsville Speedway, after Greg Erwin came down with COVID-19. The 36-year-old also served as crew chief on Joey Logano’s No. 22 Ford Mustang at Dover, after Paul Wolfe was sidelined due to penalty.
Greg Erwin my crew chief caught the Rona so he is out this weekend as some of you may have seen. Jonathan Hassler will be on the pit box tomorrow night. Just wanted to update you all so nobody was caught off guard!

Greg Erwin, who joined Wood Brothers Racing in 2018, after a five-season stint leading Team Penske’s NASCAR Xfinity Series program, will no longer serve as DiBenedetto’s crew chief this season. In 123 starts as a crew chief with Wood Brothers Racing, the team had only scored six top-fives and 25 top-10s, while not breaking through to visit victory lane with either Paul Menard or Matt DiBenedetto.
