Garrett Smithley will reprise his role as one of the rotating part-time drivers in the Rick Ware Racing NASCAR Cup Series stable for the 2021 season. RWR made the news official with a press release on Wednesday.

“I’m incredibly excited to be back with RWR. We really had a great year last year, and honestly raced a lot more than I was planning to, which is always a good sign,” said Smithley in the release. “Rick has given me some amazing opportunities throughout the year, and I’m excited to capitalize on this one in 2021.”

Team owner Rick Ware is happy to welcome back the Pennsylvania-native to his race team this season.

“We are really excited to have Garrett back in our cars after a memorable 2020 season,” said Ware. “We plan on building on the chemistry Garrett and the team gained after some great runs last year.”

Smithley ran a total of 26 NASCAR Cup Series events last season (a career-high), 16 of them for RWR. Smithley’s best finish of 2020 was a 24th-place effort at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This also marked his career-best finish in NCS competition.

While Smithley is back for a part-time schedule in 2021, no actual schedule was released just yet. Those announcements will be coming at a later date.
