William Byron and Hendrick Motorsports have elected to appeal the monetary fine and points penalty handed down by NASCAR on Tuesday.

The organization announced its intentions to appeal the penalty on Tuesday, just hours after the penalties were announced.

Announced as part of NASCAR’s Penalty Report, Byron was fined $50,000 and docked 25 driver and owner points.

Byron, one of 12 drivers still eligible to hoist the championship trophy at season’s end, fell from third to tenth in Playoff standings as a result of the penalty, and now sits eight points below the cutline.

The appeal will likely be of the utmost importance to the No. 24 team, as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to a pair of tracks that have historically been wildcards, Talladega and Charlotte’s ROVAL.

TobyChristie.com has reached out to Hendrick Motorsports for a statement on their decision to appeal, but has yet to receive a response.
