UPDATE: William Byron DQed, Jeremy Doss Named Winner in Pensacola

William Byron, who was initially scored as the winner of Friday night’s ASA Southern Super Series event at 5 Flags Speedway, after taking the lead from Jeremy Doss with 37 laps to go, has been disqualified.

ASA officials found something that was not up to spec on the No. 24 Anthony Campi Racing super late model in post-race inspection.

As a result, Byron will forfeit his first career win at the short track in Pensacola, Florida. Doss, who finished second, has been named the official race winner of night one of the PepperJack Kennels Double Header weekend.

Doss, who started from the second position, was the leader for the majority of the event but lost the lead in the closing stages of the race to Byron.

William Byron has done a lot in his young racing career, but he had never won an event at 5 Flags Speedway — that is until Friday night in the ASA Southern Super Series event that makes up part of the Blizzard Series.

Byron started the race from the fourth position, and on Lap 5 the driver narrowly avoided disaster. As he was running in fifth position, a massive 17-car pileup ensued behind Byron after Derek Thorn and Matthew Craig made contact.

After a lengthy red flag for cleanup, Byron and the remainder of the field went back to work. As Byron let the race come to him methodically, Jeremy Doss opted to go for the jugular.

As Doss led the majority of the 100-lap race, Byron — the NASCAR Cup Series star — caught and passed Doss with 37 laps remaining. After another caution with 36 laps remaining, Byron would get a great restart, and it would be all she wrote for Doss and the field.

Byron would go on to score the win in the No. 24 Anthony Campi Racing super late model. Byron, who has a couple of other Super Late Model wins this season in various starts, credits his team for bringing a great car to the track on Friday night to help him finally score a win at one of his worst tracks.

“It was good. Our car was really good. These guys did a great job all weekend — or all day — just preparing a good car,” Byron explained. “We have been inching up and working on some things. Just proud of the whole team, Anthony, all of the guys on the team. It was a really good win. Hard fought. I have never won here, I feel like it’s one of my weaker tracks.”

The 25-year-old will now head to Pocono Raceway for NASCAR Cup Series practice and qualifying on Saturday, and then he’ll attempt to score his fifth victory of the season in Sunday’s HighPoint.com 400 at the 2.5-mile triangular speedway.

While Friday night’s race was a tune-up session for Byron’s bid to win the Snowball Derby at 5 Flags Speedway in the Winter, he hopes he learned some things in Friday night’s race that he can use in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono.

“It was fun tonight. Hopefully, a little bit of it translates. These cars are tough when the tires get worn out. It gets really slick off the corner. Hopefully, we have a good weekend in Pocono,” Byron said.

Heading into this weekend, Byron trails Martin Truex Jr. by 17 points for the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season championship lead.
