After riding the struggle bus all afternoon at Phoenix Raceway, Joey Logano is now having to take the mandatory ambulance ride to the infield care center, after getting taken out in a six-car wreck in the final stage of Sunday’s Shriners Children’s 500.
The accident was triggered when John Hunter Nemechek gave an unnecessarily hard shot to Logano entering the first corner while battling for a position barely inside the top 25, which sent the No. 22 Ford Mustang crashing into the first corner.
A two-time champion of the NASCAR Cup Series, Logano had no chance to save his car, spinning up the track and collecting several others, including Josh Berry, Corey LaJoie, Zane Smith, and Derek Kraus, which each getting a varying amount of damage.
Logano, Kraus, and LaJoie were all unable to continue in the race, having the most substantial damage of the six cars involved. However, Berry and Zane Smith were able to continue, although one or multiple laps behind the race leaders.
Logano will be the second Team Penske driver to retire from Sunday’s 312-lap contest, joining Austin Cindric, who was involved in an accident on the fifth lap of the race.
