After a two-week break for the Summer Olympics in Paris, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to competition with Sunday’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway on Sunday, August 11. NASCAR’s top division will run 400 laps around the three-quarter-mile short track in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday evening.

Denny Hamlin, a native of Virginia, will be starting on the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event, after a rather surprising result in qualifying. The No. 11 Toyota Camry XSE was the slowest of the 10 drivers that advanced into the final round, but had the least round-over-round fall-off, allowing him to score his 43rd career pole.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will look to repeat from earlier this year, when he went to Victory Lane at the three-quarter-mile racetrack after some late-race restart controversy. Martin Truex, Jr., Josh Berry, Chase Elliott, and Christopher Bell round out the top-five starters.

Trackhouse Racing teammates Daniel Suarez and Ross Chastain looked to have solid pace in the consecutive lap averages in practice. Both drivers, though, will start outside the top-10.

The biggest storyline for Sunday’s event, though, is the tires. NASCAR has given teams two tire compounds to choose from for the Cook Out 400, similar to the NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro, where teams were provided the usual compound, as well as a softer tire compound, that is designed to be quicker on the fire off, and fade as the run progresses.

2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson will be looking to continue his winning ways Sunday at Richmond, after dominating the Knoxville Nationals on Saturday, earning his third win in the prestigious Sprint Car event.

Also on the docket for Sunday (August 11) is the NASCAR Canada Series, which tackles one of its most prestigious events of the season, the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres. Coverage of that event will happen on FloRacing and TSN at 2:10 pm ET.
