After an incident during the Last Chance Qualifier in Sunday’s Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, NASCAR is set to have a discussion with Ty Gibbs.
Brad Moran, Managing Director of the NASCAR Cup Series, told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Tuesday that Gibbs’ actions under caution at Bowman Gray will be the subject of a pre-season talk between the official and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.
“We’re all there, we know it’s a tough place and there’s going to be some aggression and good short-track racing, which is what we wanted, but I’ll be having a discussion with Ty [Gibbs] before going to the track at Daytona [International Speedway], get his take on what happened, and make sure we’re clear on what we need from that point moving forward.”
During Sunday’s 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier, Gibbs was running near the front of the pack when contact from Justin Haley spun the No. 54 Toyota Camry XSE.
Seeing his chances of advancing into the 200-lap main event fade away, Gibbs was upset with the Spire Motorsports driver, and decided to embrace the spirit of “The Madhouse” and retaliate.
When driving into the ride-side door of Haley’s No. 7 Chevrolet under caution, the two cars touched wheels, sending the third-year NASCAR Cup Series driver airborne.

Neither driver managed to advance into the Cook Out Clash.
It’s unknown whether any penalties — whether it be a points penalty or a monetary fine — will be assessed to Gibbs for his contact with Haley under the caution flag.
