FOX Sports Failed To Show Several Late-Race Incidents On Watkins Glen Cup Broadcast

It has to be said that FOX Sports did a great job showcasing Shane van Gisbergen’s drive through the field from 29 seconds behind race leader Ty Gibbs with 25 laps remaining in Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen, to taking the race lead with eight laps left, and pulling away for his seventh career NASCAR Cup Series win.

However, the FS1 broadcast did fail to show viewers several incidents that transpired over the final few laps of the race, including a massive impact with 10 laps to go, which many feel should have brought out a caution.

Here are all of the on-track crashes and spins that were not shown on the FS1 broadcast late in Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen:

29 Laps To Go: Josh Bilicki Spins Katherine Legge

In a battle for 34th place, Josh Bilicki got into Katherine Legge as the two drivers attempted to navigate through the bus stop portion of the Watkins Glen International road course with 29 laps to go.

Legge, who had possession of the 34th position, lost control of the spot after contact from Bilicki at the bus stop, sending her spinning out.

15 Laps To Go: JHN Sends Bubba Wallace Spinning

FOX showed the end result of Wallace driving away from a spin with 15 laps to go, but the FS1 broadcast never followed up with how Wallace was sent spinning from a top-20 position late in the race.

In Turn 1, John Hunter Nemechek made contact with the rear of Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota, which sent Wallace spinning out of the groove.

Nemechek would go on to score a 10th-place finish in Sunday’s race, while Wallace would finish a disappointing 29th.

11 Laps To Go: Josh Berry Spun By Cole Custer

While battling for the 21st position with 11 laps to go, Josh Berry was sent for a spin through Turn 6 after contact from behind from Cole Custer. FOX showed Berry skidding off the track surface, but left the spin to show the battle for the lead between Ty Gibbs and Connor Zilisch.

10 Laps To Go: Cody Ware’s Spectacular Crash

While it was not shown on the FOX Sports broadcast of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen, Cody Ware was involved in a heavy impact on the exit of Turn 6 with 10 laps to go in the race.

Ware, who was battling to the right side of Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Chevrolet, seemingly received a tap from behind, which sent him skidding driver’s side door first into the inside barriers. Upon impact, Ware’s No. 51 Chevrolet shot back across and came to a stop, facing the wrong way, just inside the confines of the racing surface.

Ware was able to drive his battered car away from the crash after a few moments and took it to the garage.

While the incident occurred as a battle for the lead had intensified between Ty Gibbs and Connor Zilisch, it’s interesting that FOX Sports never worked back to showing the incident on the broadcast, which aside from Shane van Gisbergen’s march from 29 seconds behind to win the race, the biggest on-track action highlight on the broadcast was arguably a tent flying onto the track to bring out the caution.

Many have also wondered why the impact from Ware didn’t cause NASCAR Race Control to throw a yellow flag.

Observers at the track noted that the impact caused significant damage to the guardrail barrier, which sits directly above a pedestrian walkway tunnel at the track.

Final Lap: Hocevar And Berry Get Together

On the final lap of Sunday’s race, Carson Hocevar and Josh Berry got into it in a battle for 28th place. Going into Turn 1, Berry got into the back of Hocevar in an attempt to get Hocevar to slide up the track. Berry’s move worked, but as Berry attempted to get around Hocevar, he hadn’t cleared Hocevar’s No. 77 Chevrolet before he attempted to cut back up the track.

Hocevar was still there and didn’t let off the gas. Berry would spin across the front bumper of Hocevar’s car and would collide with a tire pack in the outer groove of Turn 1.

If you’re a fan of Katherine Legge, Bubba Wallace, Josh Berry, or Cody Ware, hopefully, this breakdown of the incidents that transpired over the final Stage of Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen helps add context to why your favorite driver saw their days impacted at random points of the final Stage.

  1. They didn’t miss the message on the wall where that tent landed. It only appeared for a few seconds before the director noticed — fans had written in huge letters:
    “Kyle Busch Sits To Pee”.

Even Kyle would get a chuckle at that.
