Denny Hamlin to Run Darrell Waltrip Throwback at Darlington

The display of appreciation for three-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion and 19-year veteran broadcaster Darrell Waltrip continues during Waltrip’s final week of working for FOX Sports.

On Friday, Denny Hamlin unveiled the throwback paint scheme that he personally designed for this year’s Bojangle’s Southern 500, and it is the scheme that Waltrip ran from 1991 to 1995 with Western Auto as the sponsor.

Hamlin has Waltrip help him uncover the car, and the driver of the No. 11 is excited to honor the legendary driver and broadcaster.

“I’m thrilled to honor Darrell Waltrip’s last race as a FOX broadcaster, and to celebrate to his legendary career in the sport of NASCAR,” Hamlin said.

FedEx allowed Hamlin to design his Darlington throwback Scheme this season because he won the Daytona 500. Hamlin actually designed two cars and let Joe Gibbs Racing employees select the winner, the Waltrip Western Auto Scheme won the contest.

“This has been a fun way to incorporate our entire team at JGR who work hard day-in and day-out to bring us fast cars at the race track,” Hamlin said.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is honoring the exact same scheme this week in Sonoma Raceway, which marks Waltrip’s last race in the booth for FOX.

Hamlin will run the scheme in September.
