Delma Cowart, Former NASCAR Winston Cup Series Driver, Passes Away at Age of 80

Former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Delma Cowart passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80.

Denise Cowart, Delma’s daughter, announced the news on social media Wednesday morning, posting a picture of herself and her father, with an overlay saying: “RIP Daddio. July 6, 1941 – November 10th, 2021.”

 

The Savannah, Georgia-native attempted to qualify for 80 NASCAR Winston Cup Series events between 1981 and 1997, starting a total of 21 events with a career-best result of 17th in the 1982 Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Cowart was known for attempting to qualify for events at the bigger tracks, like Daytona, Talladega, Michigan, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

Over the course of his tenure competing in the series, Cowart attempted to qualify for “The Great American Race” a total of 16 different times, making it into the field on four different occasions (1982, 1983, 1985, and 1992), recording a best finish of 25th.

Cowart was also known for saying: “I ain’t never won a race, though I ain’t lost a party.”
