Bayley Currey and the No. 4 JD Motorsports team will be carrying a throwback tribute on their Habana Brisa Chevrolet Camaro this weekend. No, the scheme will not be a throwback, but they will have a large decal honoring Donnie Allison’s 1979 Hawaiian Tropic paint scheme.

“It’s going to be a great weekend at Darlington with this special car and Habana Brisa,” said JD Motorsports team owner Johnny Davis. “I remember how special that No. 1 car looked on the race track, and I hope we can bring some of that kind of flavor to the race with this car Saturday.”

That 1979 car, driven by Donnie Allison, was part of one of the most iconic finishes in NASCAR history — the 1979 Daytona 500. Allison battled Cale Yarborough for the race win, when on the final lap, the two drivers crashed heading into turn 3.

Following the crash, the two, joined by Donnie’s older brother Bobby Allison, got into a fist fight on national television.

The decal that will be on Currey’s car features Allison posing in front of the No. 1 car in 1979 alongside Ron Rice, the developer of Hawaiian Tropic — Allison’s 1979 sponsor. Rice is also the developer of Habana Brisa — Currey’s current sponsor.

Rice sees a lot of similarities between Allison and Currey as drivers.

“I can see Donnie’s driving style in Bayley,” Rice said in a JD Motorsports team release. “They are very similar on track in a lot of ways. Honoring Donnie’s car is a great way to remember the good times and success we had in those days and to introduce Habana Brisa to a new generation of race fans.”

Back in April, JD Motorsports announced the addition of Habana Brisa Reef Friendly Sun Care as a primary sponsor for Currey in the race at Talladega Superspeedway. The sun care brand returns for their second turn on the No. 4 car this weekend.

Currey sits 24th in the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship standings after 10 races. The Texas-native has scored five top-20 finishes and has a season-best finish of 17th, which he achieved at both Martinsville and Talladega.

The 25-year old will look to better that finish in this weekend’s race at Darlington Raceway.
