Reigning and four-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves has crashed during the first day of the Open Test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The driver of the No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda saw his day come to an end with roughly 1h,21m remaining. He was on the acceleration lane after exiting pit road to join the action in the session when the Castroneves lost control of the car, sliding through the short chute before crashing nearly head-on into the outside wall at Turn 2.
Castroneves was able to exit the car under his own power, and immediately began inspecting the damage. The car is the exact same challenger the 46-year-old Brazilian drove to Victory Lane in last year’s edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
