INDIANAPOLIS — The first crash during the month of May ahead of the 2023 Indianapolis 500 took place during post-qualifying practice on Monday afternoon. Stefan Wilson backed off the throttle heading to Turn 1 and Katherine Legge hit the rear of the No. 24 Dreyer and Reinbold Racing Chevrolet.

The No. 44 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda came to a stop in Turn 2. Wilson’s car stopped near corner entry.

Legge was seen and released by IndyCar medical personnel.

“The cars in front were all checking up and I lifted as much as I could and downshifted and hit the brakes,” Legge said. “It wasn’t enough as they were checking up, so I went into the back of Stefan and we both ended up in the wall.”

IndyCar’s safety team assisted Wilson out of the car and into the ambulance. The British driver gave a thumbs up sign as he got into the ambulance on the track.

“I can tell you that he is doing well,” IndyCar Medical Director Dr. Julia Vaizer said. “He’s being transported to a local hospital for advanced imaging and further evaluation but he is in good spirits.”

After an extended yellow flag to address some wall repairs, IndyCar extended the two hour session an additional 10 minutes. Will Power was fastest overall with a lap of 229.222 mph.

The final practice session before the 2023 Indianapolis 500 will be Carb Day on Friday, May 26th starting at 11:00 a.m. ET. The 2023 Indianapolis 500 will air live on NBC on Sunday, May 28th with the broadcast starting at 11:00 a.m. ET.
