Scott Dixon is looking to finish how he started after leading opening practice for the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Tuesday morning.

The six-time NTT IndyCar Series champion logged a total of 25 laps in the two-hour session, with his No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda hitting a best at 227.119 mph around Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Marcus Ericsson, Dixon’s teammate, was second-fastest in the session, just 0.0269s off the top spot (226.965 mph).

Despite being an Indy-only squad, Dreyer & Reinbold showed it came to play with Sage Karam rolling off the third-best time in the session at 226.398 mph. The 27-year-old also put down 52 laps (second-most in the session) in the No. 24 Chevrolet.

Conor Daly put the No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet in fourth, with Marco Andretti’s No. 98 Andretti Herta Autosport with Marco and Curb-Agajanian Honda in fifth.

Santino Ferrucci, Scott McLaughlin, Alex Palou, Pato O’Ward, JR Hildebrand rounded out the rest of the top 10.

Kyle Kirkwood was the highest rookie in 11th, 224.484 mph and logged a session-most 54 laps.

There were no on-track incidents in opening practice, with the only brief cause for concern coming from a trio of CGR cars – Dixon, Palou and Jimmie Johnson – along with Ed Carpenter’s No. 33 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet entry – that had smoke arise from apparent resin on the headers during the install laps.
