The timing of Zane Smith’s first career pole in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series couldn’t be any better, as the driver faces off against Ty Majeski, Chandler Smith, and Ben Rhodes for the 2022 series championship.
Smith, driving for Front Row Motorsports, will have the best starting spot of the bunch – and of anyone in the field, for that matter – posting a quick time of 26.081 seconds (138.032mph) to capture his first career pole position.
Layne Riggs, who will make his third NASCAR Truck Series start for Halmar Friesen Racing on Friday, will start alongside Smith, as he picks up his second top-five starting spot in his first three starts.
Riggs, the 2022 NASCAR Advance Auto Weekly Racing Series National Champion, spoke to TobyChristie.com earlier this week about his career path and future goals ahead of his third career start at the one-mile oval.
Corey Heim will start the 150-lap contest from the second row, with Tanner Gray and Stewart Friesen each earning starting positions inside the top five.
Ben Rhodes, who had engine issues in Thursday’s 50-minute practice session, will start the race from sixth, leading a long line of ThorSport Racing trucks, with Christian Eckes, Ty Majeski, and Matt Crafton occupying positions seven through nine.
John Hunter Nemechek completed the top-10. Nemechek’s teammate, Chandler Smith, earned the lowest starting spot of the four championship-eligible drivers on Friday, qualifying his Safelite Toyota Tundra in 12th.
Kaden Honeycutt, Jake Garcia, and Rajah Caruth – three young drivers making some of their first starts in the series – put up respectable qualifying efforts on Friday, and will start 15th, 16th, and 18th.
Chase Purdy and Jack Wood – who was announced as Kyle Busch Motorsports’ 2023 anchor drivers just minutes before qualifying began – will start 17th and 19th, respectively.
