Ty Gibbs, who scored the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in 2022, will officially move to the NASCAR Cup Series for the 2023 season. Gibbs will drive for his family-owned Joe Gibbs Racing team and he will pilot the No. 54.

JGR made the official announcement on Tuesday in the form of a four-paragraph statement.

Chris Gayle, who has served as Gibbs’ crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, will move with the driver to the NASCAR Cup Series.

With the addition of the No. 54 car into their stable for the 2023 season, JGR will not use the No. 18 next season, the team’s original number. However, the team stated their intention to utilize the number in the future.

Gibbs, 20, has proven to be one of the most impressive young talents in NASCAR history. At just 20 years old, Gibbs has already amassed a NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, 11 NASCAR Xfinity Series wins, an ARCA Menards Series championship as well as 18 ARCA Menards Series victories.

While Gibbs is ultra-talented, he has proven to be a polarizing lightning rod for the NASCAR fanbase.

In 2022, Gibbs stepped in for the injured Kurt Busch at 23XI Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Gibbs competed in a total of 15 races for 23XI in a combination of the team’s No. 45 and No. 23 entries.

Gibbs scored one top-10 finish in his 15 starts.

Unfortunately, Gibbs was unable to compete in the final race of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season due to the tragic passing of his father Coy Gibbs following the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Race the night before.

Gibbs moving to the NASCAR Cup Series full-time in 2023 is the latest official move for next year. To keep up with all of the driver and team moves heading into the new season, head to the TobyChristie.com 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Driver / Team tracker:
