Video: Mayer, Allmendinger Make Contact; Triggers 12-Car Wreck on Lap 1 at Indianapolis

Well, it took about three-quarters of a lap for chaos to erupt in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday.

Contact between Sam Mayer and AJ Allmendinger on the opening lap of the Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis has triggered a 12-car pileup in Turn 3, which has heavily impacted the afternoons of many drivers.

The contact happened with Mayer in the middle of a three-wide situation, with teammate Carson Kvapil on his inside and Allmendinger on his outside, which sent the No. 1 Chevrolet crashing into the outside wall.

This first-lap incident collected at least 12 racecars, including Sam Mayer, Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith, Josh Berry, AJ Allmendinger, Joe Graf, Jr., Conor Daly, Jeb Burton, Parker Retzlaff, Jeremy Clements, and Chandler Smith.

The damage to both Mayer and Berry was far too extensive for them to continue, which means they’ll finish 37th and 38th, respectively. All other drivers involved in the wreck were able to continue, albeit with some damage.
