AJ Allmendinger Gets Weekend Started Right with Xfinity Pole at Indy

Having won two of the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ three road course events so far this season, AJ Allmendinger and Kaulig Racing enter Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the undoubted favorites to secure the victory in Saturday’s Pennzoil 150.

Even though the 40-year-old still has to make it through the duration of the event, he’s gotten off to a fantastic start this weekend, winning the pole position for Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at the 2.439-mile road course.

Posting a time of 89.748 seconds (97.834mph), Allmendinger notched his sixth career pole position in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and his third of the 2022 season over Ty Gibbs by just under a tenth of a second.

Gibbs, who will run double-duty alongside AJ Allmendinger and others, secured the second-place starting spot in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Supra, his fourth top-two starting spot in the last five Xfinity Series events.

Riley Herbst will start the event in third place, while NASCAR Cup Series full-timer Alex Bowman will start alongside the No. 98 in the second row. Sam Mayer – a second-year driver for JR Motorsports completed the top five.

Chase Briscoe – the winner of the inaugural Xfinity Series event at Indy’s Road Course in 2020 – will start from sixth, with Noah Gragson, Josh Berry, Austin Hill, and Justin Allgaier rounding out the top-10.

Bubba Wallace – driving the No. 18 Toyota Supra for Joe Gibbs Racing — will start from 13th, while other double-dippers, Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, and Ty Dillon will start 18th, 20th, and 27th, respectively.

With 42 cars entered for Saturday’s Pennzoil 150 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Road Course, four drivers failed to qualify for the event, by virtue of being too low in series owner points.

JJ Yeley (#66 MBM Motorsports), Josh Williams (#78 BJ McLeod Motorsports), Brad Perez (#13 MBM Motorsports), and Mason Filippi (#90 DGM Racing) all failed to qualify for the event.
