It was close but no cigar for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular Chandler Smith in Saturday night’s CARS Tour Throwback 276 Super Late Model event at Hickory Speedway as Smith would come home in the runner-up spot.

Matt Craig, who started from the pole and scored the win, took his first CARS Tour Super Late Model win of 2021.

In the early portion of the event, it was Carson Kvapil, son of former NASCAR Truck Series champion Travis Kvapil, who was the main competition for Craig. But as the race headed into the final stretch, it was Smith that came alive and attempted to hunt down Craig for the win.

But Craig had enough speed to hold off Smith in his No. 54 machine.

Here are the official results from the CARS Super Late Model Throwback 276 at Hickory:

  1. Matthew Craig
  2. Chandler Smith
  3. Bubba Pollard
  4. Carson Kvapil
  5. Kyle Plott
  6. Brandon Setzer
  7. Lee Tissot
  8. Michael Ritch
  9. Daniel Webster
  10. Jeff Batten
  11. Justin Crider
  12. Tyler Church

*Revision note: This story originally stated that this win was Matt Craig’s first career CARS Super Late Model Tour win, it was actually his first win of 2021, and his ninth-career win in the series.
