They say where there is smoke there is fire. And ultimately, that may ring true for a rumor that apparently started on Reddit on Wednesday, but for now any rumor of huge changes coming for Richard Petty Motorsports have been denied.

According to a Reddit rumor, Richard Petty Motorsports employees had just received new business cards with a new — old — organization name on them — Petty Enterprises. According to the posts the Petty family had taken their team back from investor Andrew Murstein and that a big announcement for the team was on the docket for next week.

From there, the rumor kept building and getting out of hand.

All of a sudden the team would have a slew of brand new sponsors to return the No. 43 to glory. A few minutes later, there was an alternate universe presented where the team would drop to part-time involvement in 2020 and it would sell its Charter to Richard Childress Racing so they could field a full-time No. 31 ride for Tyler Reddick.

Keeping up? I know it’s confusing.

That’s when an actual employee of Richard Petty Motorsports, named Lance, stepped in to set the record straight. Lance said nothing was set to change at RPM and that Bubba Wallace was their driver (others had begun to speculate that Wallace would be removed).

Bob Pockrass also reached out to Murstein, who confirmed as well that nothing was changing with his organization.

So, for now nothing is set to change at Richard Petty Motorsports, but as the team struggles to find results in 2019 it could continue being the target for the rumor mill until something does change.
