Absolutely gutting news on Saturday as renowned NASCAR artist Sam Bass has passed away. The news was broken by Sam’s wife Denise on his official Twitter handle @sambassartist.

“It is with a sad heart that our family shares the news of our loss with the NASCAR community,” Denise Bass wrote. “Sam Bass, a loving husband, father, and inspiration to us all, passed away earlier today. Thank you for your prayers during this very difficult time.”

Bass was the driving force behind many of the great pieces of NASCAR art that you’ve seen hanging on walls, but he is also the creator of some of the most iconic paint schemes in NASCAR history including Jeff Gordon’s rainbow warrior scheme and flames scheme.

Bass will forever be linked to the sport through his art, but anyone who knew him will always remember him for his infectious upbeat personality. He was an incredible human being.

Bass was 57 years old and had been suffering from complications from diabetes and had been in search of a kidney transplant.
