JR Motorsports teammates Justin Allgaier and Noah Gragson paced the sole practice session for Saturday’s Production Alliance Group 300 at Auto Club Speedway, asserting themselves as early favorites for the second event of the NASCAR Xfinity Series season.
The 20-minute practice session – part of NASCAR’s new format for on-track activity in 2022 — allows the drivers and teams to shakedown their vehicles prior to the start of single-car qualifying, which will occur minutes after the completion of the session.
On his first lap of practice, Allgaier posted a time of 40.353 seconds (178.425mph), leading Gragson by over a tenth of a second. Brandon Jones, AJ Allmendinger, and Ty Gibbs rounded out the top-five lap times.
Jeremy Clements, Ryan Sieg, Daniel Hemric, Riley Herbst, and Cole Custer rounded out the top-10 in the brief practice session.
Based on the results of Saturday’s 20-minute practice, Anthony Alfredo (No. 23), Will Rodgers (No. 33), and Brennan Poole (No. 47) would fail to qualify for the Production Alliance Group 300. In order to ensure a spot in the field, drivers will need to record a time inside the top-33 in qualifying.
