Video: William Byron Wiped Out in Multi-Car Melee on Lap 74 of Brickyard 400

William Byron, who came into Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the fifth-place man in the Regular-Season championship standings, is done for the day after a multi-car crash on Lap 74 of the crown jewel event.

The incident was triggered by contact between Chase Briscoe and Byron on the exit of Turn 2. As that contact transpired, Ryan Preece made contact with the No. 21 of Harrison Burton, which sent Burton into Byron.

As Burton collided with Byron, it sent Byron spinning to the inside of the track, where he collected AJ Allmendinger. Byron’s day came to an end with a hard impact to the inside wall on the backstretch after being nailed by Allmendinger.

Here are additional replays of the crash:

In all, five drivers (Briscoe, Byron, Burton, Allmendinger and Preece) were involved in the crash, which spelled the end of the day for Burton, Allmendinger, and Byron.

After being checked and released from the infield care center, Byron placed the blame on Briscoe for the crash.

“We got back there in traffic. It seems the pit stop sequence didn’t go our way, obviously, there. And then [Briscoe] was just being a squirrel back in the pack, and drove up in front of me,” Byron explained. “Had to lift late off the corner, and got run over. Hate it for out team. We had an amazing car, running there on the right strategy top two or three. And get back there in the pack, and get wrecked.”

Byron continued, “Yeah, I mean he lifted or came up in front of me, choked me up. We were just back there with the squirrels.”
